Interpolations

Interpolations (2024) is inspired by Zhuang’s recent explorations of Mount Bromo, the Ijen volcano and the caves of Perak and Sarawak. Images of the environments that she captured on her travels are interpolated into a continually shifting landscape projected onto sculpted soil erosion mat. Close by, weaves with jute fibres and bamboo yarn incorporate found ocjects. Zhuang also experiments with cyanotype on jute fabric. Stiffened and crinkled, they are suspended from the ceiling, evoking the blue flames of Ijen.

In mathematics and data analysis, interpolation is a type of estimation to find the unknown values between known data points. It also generally refers to the insertion of things of a different nature into something else. In this layered installation, Zhuang makes new temporal and material configurations to mediate on the possibility of a closer relationship to the natural world based on care and consideration.
